What is PRP Therapy?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a cutting-edge, growth factor-based treatment for hair loss that falls under the regenerative medicine umbrella, alongside stem cell therapy. This innovative treatment harnesses your body's natural healing power to promote hair growth and restore thickness to thinning areas.

Sources of Growth Factors in Hair Loss Treatment

There are three potential sources for growth factors:

  1. Synthetic: Currently available as proprietary products administered with specialized ultrasound devices
  2. Exogenous: Including exosomes obtained from bone marrow or placenta, as well as plant-based and other external growth factors
  3. Endogenous: Obtained from the patient's own blood - this is the most well-known form of PRP and the focus of our treatment

How Does PRP Work for Hair Loss?

While the exact mechanism of action for how PRP promotes hair growth continues to be studied, we know that PRP contains at least six different growth factors. The individual and synergistic effects of these proteins create a powerful environment for hair regeneration.

Key Growth Factors in PRP

The growth factors most involved in hair growth include:

  • Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF)
  • Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)
  • Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)

These growth factors work together to increase the duration of the anagen (growth phase) of hair and may increase the thickness of the hair shaft.

Beyond growth factors, PRP contains at least 30 other beneficial substances, including chemokines, clotting factors, and immune mediators, all of which may contribute to improved hair growth and scalp health.

Who's a Good Candidate for PRP?

Like most non-surgical treatments for hair loss, the best candidates for PRP therapy are individuals with thinning hair rather than complete baldness, and those who have experienced more recent hair loss. While thinning hair is more common in younger individuals, anyone with hair thinning may benefit from this treatment.

Ideal Candidates Include:

  • Individuals with thinning hair (not complete baldness)
  • Those experiencing recent hair loss
  • Patients with naturally higher platelet levels (advantage for treatment effectiveness)
  • People seeking natural, non-surgical hair restoration options

The PRP Treatment Process

  • Consultation & Consent: Your visit begins with a comprehensive explanation of the procedure and signing of an informed consent form, ensuring you understand all risks, benefits, limitations, and alternatives.
  • Blood Collection: A specific quantity of blood is drawn (amount depends on the system used by our clinic). While your PRP is being prepared, you'll be moved to a comfortable treatment room.
  • PRP Preparation: Your blood sample is processed using specialized protocols, which may involve single or double centrifugation. This creates three distinct products: packed red blood cells, platelet-poor plasma (PPP), and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
  • Quality Testing: A small sample may be tested to determine the exact platelet concentration. Our goal is to concentrate platelets 2-6 times higher than your starting level.
  • Treatment Administration: The PRP is carefully injected in small quantities (as little as 0.05 ml), allowing for up to 120 precise injection sites per procedure. At least 6 ml of PRP is typically available for injection.
  • Optional Microneedling: PRP is often combined with microneedling to further stimulate growth factor release and enhance results.

Required Number of Sessions

PRP treatments require multiple sessions for optimal effectiveness. While there's no universal standard, a common and effective treatment program includes:

Typical Treatment Schedule:

  • Initial Phase: One treatment session each month for three months
  • Maintenance Phase: Booster session every six months

Your practitioner will discuss your personalized treatment program and explain the rationale behind your recommended schedule.

Post-Treatment Care

To ensure optimal results from your PRP therapy, please follow these important post-treatment guidelines:

  • Avoid using scalp products or camouflage products prior to the procedure
  • Refrain from anti-inflammatory agents such as NSAIDs and aspirin for up to 14 days after treatment, as they may interfere with PRP's beneficial effects
  • Follow any additional specific instructions provided by your practitioner

Safety & Side Effects

PRP injections are considered extremely safe. Since the substance injected is autologous (obtained from your own body), there's no risk of blood or tissue-borne pathogens. When performed in our sterile clinical environment, infection risk is minimal.

Primary Side Effect: Local and temporary pain at injection sites is the main consideration, which typically resolves quickly.
